I like poetry.

I like rhyming words with other words.
I like saying what I want to say in a way different from normal speech,
I like playing with language to instill images and feelings in less words than normal.
I like making words sound like they fit together in one big mass of words.
I like creating, twisting, manipulating visions to try to fit into these words.

it is no easy task, but I like it anyway.

plus, poetry is easy when I don't want to write something out. oh if we were all to speak and communicate in poem; that would be quite interesting. except spoken word would defeat it and turn it back into normal speech. theres spoken word again!

Even if you win the race, you're still a rat.
......

this Race
is but a maze of tirades and transparent facades
a space given to subtle disgrace
given to unnamed faces
given to emotion-laced complacency.
yet untainted, we trudge on
with faded boots in fudged mud like a jaded curmudgeon;
an overexperienced Theseus,
waxing the paradoxes of his own mind, body, and soul
to have smudged fun,
a weak species trapped in its own feces
against a Minotaur of towering position.
and for fear that we cower and transition to trace a higher power to fake wisdom,
disavowing boundaries to create tests of oppressed personal tradition
blessed we be
to remember the place in our own state of manifest destiny --
this Race.
......

I was invited to join the race at rijah.com.
what race?
i suppose it refers to the race of keeping up with society, or the race to beat it. or does it refer to this rat race of life? actually it might refer to keeping up with the internet and having your own place in it. not sure. its whatever you want to make of it. Reej puts it in relative terms:

even if you win the race, you're still a rat.

or a mouse like me. an unhosted, unhitched mouse at that.

the other rats/mice? Adam, Amaya ,Caroline, Cristian, Daphne, Ed, Jared, Justin, Lorraine, Mahk, Chris, Rob, Mark, and Rijah.

fun fun, what next? get my OWN damn place in the (internet) race.

Bane.

......

While I was waiting for the Atari's to come onstage, I thought this one up:

i am like superman's Bane, but the bane of his existence,
consisting of a persistence of tense bone marrow resilience.

trying to stream this one resulted in something completely different in structure length focus style. but named of its predecessor.
......

Bane

I am enough to entrance you to try to escape through
a tubular construe with pitfall excludes --

a clause within dashed line eagle claws,
this prey's cause lost among law's cotton ball shawls --

that include an install of nude tubes of bull shit balls
recalled on small models, renditions of flame firewalls;

unexplainable in plain view that you are sane and able
and I will reside as the survivor of a Cain and Abel fable.

......

see more random stuff like this here.

Punk Rock Rebel

......

Warped Tour was pretty damn fun. why you ask?

temperatures in the 70s at 2pm. Not bad, you say.
No entrance line. Sweet, you exuberantly exclaim.
Hot tanned chicks in studs and flannel and tubes and Dickies and bikinis and black. Great eye candy, you smirkily remark.
Six hours of (half hour) punk sets and festival livelihood. The Secret, you theorize.

The Secret of the Warped Tour was the music (and girls)! This was probably the largest scale punk event I've ever been to, its still not bigger than Monster Massive 00 and UCLA sports, but its up there. Considering how big LA Colisseum is, there were a lot of people. wearing a lot more black than I would've on a hot day, but yeah thats the way it is.
Had fun cruising the areas and seeing Reel Big Fish, Good Charlotte, Homegrown, NOFX, New Found Glory, and Lagwagon. But the two highlights, well timed at the middle and end of our stays, were The Ataris and Yellowcard.

Ataris played at 4pm on a 12x12 stage in a narrow bottleneck opening of space. Needless to say the crowd blocked all routes through to the Drive-Thru stage, which kicked ass also. But for an hour that place was packed tighter than a virg.. i mean a pack of cigarettes...
Yellowcard has impressed me with their greatest set so far, judging from the number of people coming out to see an encore performance. But I didn't know so many adolescent girls were on their jock. I guess I know what Nsync seems like (on a lower scale). Soo would've fit in just right. actually no, as those girls are even younger than she. But size wize she could knock all the naive ones away from the center of the stage.

Chris enjoyed bands he didn't get to see yesterday because he was doin the followin, w'cha!!

today's surprise new favorite band though is The Big Pill. A group of 8 dudes mixing samba, reggae, ska, and surfer style in a rhythm oriented sound. using trumpet, trombone, toms, bass, and guitar behind the lead of the drums (who is pretty friggin good) and a two deck wizard. the kicker for the band grabbing my attention is the poetry like vocals from Tru the deck master. its because the vocals don't seem to be the focus, rather, they contribute to buliding an atmosphere for each new song. What contributes most to the atmosphere is probably its live samba/salsa band feel, full of energy and vibrating rhythm. I fear I won't capture that on the CD i bought.

They remind me of An Ensemble Orchestra, this band that played in a rare visit by LA underground hip hop heads to UCLAs on-campus nightlife. Radioinactive, 2Mex, Xololanxinxo, Busdriver and the Project Blowed crew showed up with this band, consisting of a guitar and bass, multiboard piano, and drums, that played the neo-soul, jazzy lounge tip.

......

After WT we had Pete's in the area of USC, a good ass short-order restaurant. 6.50 will get you a grilled steak with french fries, two big onion rings, a salad, and rolls. On one plate and big servings though, as that description failed to emphasize that.

......

The day made fun by punk tarts looking fly in tight tops and lost bottoms, and good vibes.
I want a trucker hat, maybe a black one.

tooting the synthesized horn
......

hmph, yeah what is it with instruments dying?

ska, dying, is comparable to jazz when Fender built his electric guitars.
as a remnant of a world on the verge of electronic breakthrough, ska is disappearing in the digital age.

how fucking sad!

as a tribute, the records I bought at the flea market were of big band, Harlem Renaissance, and Classical roots. yep, some Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Beethoven, and Brahms.

8 records - $15
preserving a (soon to be) lost historical culture on its original format: near priceless!

Techno.
No Radio Play for You!

yeah fuck the rest. fuck the funky, the poppy, the climactic, the uplifting, the "chilled-out."

give me gritty broken beats, distorted samples, and hard edged sounds that kick me in the ass and say "this ain't no house music!"

the sounds of Luke Slater.

well, OLD Luke Slater, circa 1996?

right now, Luke has adopted a housey-poppy feel to it. Lately, artists have succumbed to the gold statue of mass exposure and are playing the pop card. not completely as that would be jeaopardizing their art and make them sound like all the other crap, but integrating easier and more acceptable elements into their work in order to enter the realm of mainstream acceptance and praise.

and for what? more fuckin money! more fuckin clout as an artist! its not about selling out anymore; its about changing the sound to cater the tastes of others, but mixing it up enough for them notice what was originally there. its about creating a niche in the pie that is the market for new and marketable music. with people like Luke Slater, N*E*R*D, DJ Rap, No Doubt, changing production tactics (or in the latter's case, adding it completely) and in some ways morphing their original sound, its become commonplace, at least now in the electronic world, to seriously go from true, to bunk, or not so much bunk as the equivalent of compromising creative thought, for the sole purpose of getting known. of attracting an otherwise alienated audience. Tell me you haven't heard Dirty Vegas' "Days Go By" and I'll recind my statement. But their use of a catchy vocal, vocoder play, and the driving elements familiar to prog house have really nailed them into cliche comercial America.
the point... it looks like the underground wants to come out and play in the mainstream sandbox. but its gotta play by box rules or else its Music-Nazi on the hopeful.

MS: no radio-play for you!
UG: but..
MS: no! and no bread (money) either!
UG: but..
MS: you are banned from the airwaves, now and forever until mindless domestic culture dies and capitalism no longer governs art, and when you finally realize that you earned your place 'underground' by choosing a division countering the mainstream, therefore getting you no widespread respect at all!
UG: but..
MS: yes you are right! that will never happen! begone from my ears!

it is of little known knowledge that rock n roll began the same way. with Black artists changing their sound to attract the masses. or hiring White artists to do versions of the originals, to attract the masses. or simply Black artists growing up with White influences, making White music, to attract the masses. whichever case, its a fact of music and the comercial and financial need and potential of a new audience to alter elements of an original piece in order to allow a greater audience to impartially judge and enjoy it.

poor poor underground...
hope to the hopefuls who wish to and do break the barriers... will we see them again? not in the form we remembered. not ever again. love live their grassroots beginnings.

long live young Elvis Presley at Sun Records.
long live old Atmosphere.
long live Detroit Luke Slater.
long live good Will Smith.. wait.. GOOD Will Smith never lived...
long live mid 90's Mos Def
long live original Goldfinger
long live Thriller Michael Jackson.
long live Dookie Green Day
long live SKA No Doubt (never heard it, don't have to, ska in its prime is awesome.)
long live SKA (all but dead, with actual instruments becoming obsolete.)
long live music of the beginnings of an artist.
but more importantly
long live the always sloping musical peak of an artist, regardless of time, experience, or attention.

DnB in Taiwan!

apparently, the dnb scene is in very underground mode in Taiwan. but with "a strong following" as the "newest sound" now. dope!

this is, to my knowledge, an example of whats good overseas:

DJ Danjah, sounding like a broken beat Mark Farina with the intro, which is preeeetty cool. not tech or hard/aggressive at all. and some good tracks in here!

to go along with that, AB Koo, a collective of Taipei based DJs, promotors, party lovers, music lovers set on blasting their drum n bass in their most disparate and ghetto areas (like their first party!). (not updated since May).

you know, i make the mistake of turning this damned journal all about me me me. i hate sefl-centered people. so anyway, on to my bitching! just kidding.
Just want to throw out to the net-world some mentions.

Joyce, however secluded and busy with REAL life as she had become (i'm speaking in a fond sarcastic tone, affectionate and nostalgic even), has settled in and returned to her place in this little "net."
Joycee was the first blogger I knew of and intrigued me with her descriptions of life and outpourings of her heart and soul. she had this type of mystery going on, that kept lulling me to click click click away on her site. and a smart head (fellow Bruin!)
I met her at a rave and just knew her to be "that cute girl Joyce from Sticky Icky." In a way its a different Joyce I see now; In others, its the same. but its merely.. age and maturity and insight to blame -- things that would generally make one change. when I saw her last she had the vitality and energy I realized she had when I first met her, and is now "that independent lady with a kitten and a new look."

so here

go intrigue yourself.

Jeff, a quirky and odd fellow, with more tastes and unsaid oddities of the mind than you'll normally encounter. with the flair of a businessman, the history of a hip hop hippie, the love of a punk rebel, the blood of a pilipino, and the imagination of a child, he stops the rhythm of the world of the people around him. his humor is a complex one; where most think in punchlines, Jeff thinks in situations. much of the humor he knows seems tangible and made out of normal everyday life, and so his imagination therefore is grandiose and full of atmosphere. much like mine. Jeff may be more of a mirror of me than I (or He) thinks. What is that people see that (we) I haven't?

well, see what you see and see if you see me. actually you won't see me; you'll see Jeff.

James, without whom I wouldn't have come to be the complete person that I am today. and to have known the same peoples in the same way. He always says I help him, which is true to extents, but he may have done more for me than his stubborn and humble eyes will be willing to admit. an unique example of punk culture mixed with chinese, japanese, korean pop, a side of musical artistry and generally cooky laughings. all finished off with a twist of earthened will and loyalty long lost in this come and go age.

see what he's made of.

fuzz fuzz; buzz buzz

......

just want to note that I just had the best teeth brushing i've ever had.
......

with a Sonicare in hand, warm at the touch,
silently humming the frequency of a fully charged battery;
like a mechanic wand of cleansing, it brushed with prime battery life,
bristles distinctly invisible in a grandfather clock, pendulum-like blur of tartar controlling lather.
my cottonmouthed lack of saliva thickened the rich fluoride foam
like a dense soaped scrub meeting a non-damp auto exterior
as if my canines were getting a dental massage
like locking my two door mouth into an unseen track through a Lucky Duck automatic car wash station.
......

warm with electric potential torential,
it buzzes with the life of four score quintessentials,
primed with the specialty of a royal blue Fleur-du-lis
it gleams with the purity of a pale-hued mystery

......

nothing like a fresh fully charged electric toothbrush to make my gums feel like they've been given a lubricated massage. wooo with fluoride lubes!

[dooby dooby doo......]

i haven't used that in a while. should reinstate it, give me some regulations. and organization, wooboy! some basis for normality, too..

yes, when the world stretches and blinks with the repetitiveness of green, strobing spotlights.

where i have odd thoughts like:

recording lectures from the student's point of view. and allow this to be the new "lecture notes." there is a written form, known as "minutes" for those in lack of knowledge, so why not visual.

but as Jesse points out
"then no one would go to class anymore."

oh, but i refute,
"well then wouldn't the net be 'class'?"

think of a professor, teaching from his own home and able to interact with the "students" scattered anywhere that can stream the images. thats just like video phones. below that, a combination of close-captioned TV and an intercom system. or like real-time satellite-abled recording. anything that travels through fiber-optic cables (Materials engineers made that possible you know.).

UCLA has a class reminiscent of that concept in Molecular Genetics. Class meetings simultaneously run in LA and Japan -- via satellite or streaming internet, not sure -- with one professor in LA lecturing both. don't know if thats totally mindblowing.. Think how one destiny of the fiberoptic world has been fulfilled; the fusing of knowledge by the joining of two otherwise unfamiliar peoples. and made possible by the wonder of technology.

exchange programs ensued where each class got to cause trouble in their overseas companions' countries. how fun!

TODAY
......

  • thermo class
don't ever heat up a rigid container full of mercury, or else you will create a bomb. increasing the temperature of a rigid container completely filled with mercury by 10 degrees Celsius, increases the pressure by 400x.
with water, the pressure increases 40x. thats why a full pot of water can throw the cover off when it starts boiling.

  • plush leather couch in the Presidents' (friend Strich's) room at ZBT + JBD
    J-B-D = H-I-G-H

  • In n Out with Joyce
girl was wearing some tight jeans. looking a bit more provocative out of PJs and sweatshirts. good to see her lively again! gleaming face and all.

  • call to Ji
    yup yuuuuuuuuuuuuup?

  • helped move friend Stephanie into her new apartment
took cool experimental lighting shots at the apartment, messing with Sunburst and Negative Lighting! damn cool!

  • furniture shopping on the sidewalks of Westwood
stef: "ooh what about that one! (banged up sony tv table)
me: "naaah, lets keep looking for a better one"
    stef: "that one? (large desk)"
me: "sure.. if you had a pickup!"
its like cheap-freeloader shopping. whatever, there are sometimes good finds. whole entertainment centers, tv tables, chairs, etc. wasteful idiots....too bad we didn't have good transportation, else we would've been stocked. i mean, I need a coffee table and a desk, might as well get it in exchange for some sweat and manual effort.

    winding down now.

today's prayer hope: I hope Lydia ate some good indigenous fruit, saw some exciting indigenous animals, and had fun with smiling and eyes-beaming indigenous children.
    "open your eyes!"

aileen had some verses and bible text to throw at me in order to refute what I threw out. but then she didn't want to feel like a pusher. but the compliment she paid me was one very great.

    leenie: i applaud you actually
leenie: because of what you wrote...
leenie: it gave me a sense of faith that i lost

good then. this at least means someone read what i had to say and grew a little bit from it. growth in ANY way from someone else's opinions, is what should occur. but noooooo people gotta get personal and defensive and unallowing of argument for the sake of argument. one-dimensional pricks.
