drinking jasmine tea + sugar reminds me of saturdays going to chinatown sitting at Pot Sticker restaurant on Waverly Street during my middle school years.. eating yow teu (bread rolls) and punching holes in my 'choong3 yow2 bend4' (green onion tortilla cake things). i would stamp holes with the circular tips of my chopsticks, then fill the craters with drops of soy sauce. i would dip the yow teu in sugar.
i was just remembering Beef Noodle soup. i forget exactly how it was served when it came out, but i remember pale noodles and greens and strips of beef. that was our meal for so many saturdays at a time. i couldn't understand why we changed restaurants so suddenly. i do know that i began to like it there. maybe cuz it got so busy.
i still don't understand; i never found out! ; another one of my favorite places, don't know why we stopped going... but we we often only went there for me it seems, because they had a tasty version of my absolute favorite dish. Peking Spareribs.. i still have to learn it. ...

learned how to read guitar tab scores tonight. started on Animals "House of the Rising Sun" which was all about plucking. simple to start on. i turned the guitar lateral so it was like a lyre and it was quite different. interesting, sometimes easier. i realized it takes precision of the left hand the most. my fingers are hurting, as they have been ground into metal wire for quite some time tonight. ...

[disgusted thought :: 01]
its like the art of music has been replaced by the marketing of comercial jingles.
thats what it seems like anyway. with the advent of popular music becoming widespread commodity as a tool to aid the sale of goods aka comercial jingles, my inner ears beg to ask, what happened to the art? better put, what happened to the appreciation of the art? since when did music become another property (characteristic, aspect) of marketing? ok ok so it has been a long time.. then why??
I suppose that 'imitation: the highest form of flattery' is a valid argument here, but it doesn't disgust me any less..
what it instinctively and initally means to me is this: if a music is easily reproducible, it wasn't that complex to begin with. here is where my unique opinion about the complexity of art comes in, as personally, I would think that an art would be so complex it is beyond replication. yes there is such thing as Minimalism, but the concept is complex in itself; Minimalism implies subtle complexity. simple catchy comercial jingles DO NOT; they serve as backdrops for voiceovers and pictures. and modern radio friendly rap music has not gone very far from this purpose either.
i don't know if its a thing related to quality of visual expression or simple lack of a mentality for ingenuity, but music videos sometimes aren't very different from comercials. ok so perhaps the market for visual production has the same people working in different fields. regardless, there should be a difference between an art and a product. further, one can get confused with what is heard as music on the radio and what is seen/heard on a tv comercial. further, one can be confused about what they hear on a radio comercial and what they hear on a radio show, thats fucked up.
there should be a difference.
and right now as my train of thought is clamoring through the stations of blame, I am more inclined to believe the advertisers guilty of appropriation than the artists of selling out their work to the highest bidder (although the latter HAS occurred ie Daft Punk). there is the third possibility that it is simply common use of the same pool of ideas but that is still idiotic because there shouldn't be a constant pool of commonly used ideas.
"If you can't buy it or obtain it through permission, make it yourself!" the exact principle of the appropriation and theft of ideas.
i don't even think I can articulate my dislike for what this has turned into in my head.
this is further expanded in something like when comercial advertisements imitate tv shows that feature a music and culture that promote a product and lifestyle that is in turn sought after by an unknowing sheeple (people) whom cling to and are entranced by mass media to gain what they think is lifestyle.
bah, some circles can be really fucked up.

on a more idealistic and informational and possibly even more inspirational note, Michael Jackson interviews Pharrell Williams.
read it and you will understand more about the process of creation and what it instills in a person. the transcript, even taken out of context of music is still bold from the content and words alone. I connect with things like these mainly because I believe the comments are sincere and true and said with an eloquence that eludes me. like the previous excerpt I quoted from American Photo. the editor of Interview magazine is quoted as saying the transcript was breathtaking. perhaps I have a different meaning for that word, but I suppose it was, to someone who never sees or experiences that type of honesty and love. i mean.. i nodded and read intently and agreed wholeheartedly with what Pharrel had to say, but I took it all in as a student listening to two teachers conversing. funny how I could imagine MJ's voice.
it was nothing compared to the pallid horizon prior to a nude winter sunrise (or the waning shadowed flames of clouded sky before sunset) viewed from the top of a pure Colombian-cocaine white mountain overlooking the faded snowcapped pine green trees, the inklings of civilized light, and the serene gradient navy blackness of Lake Tahoe. it comes close to to MJ's acapella of "Rock with You," but not Tahoe. maybe when someone tells me that the world will be there when I dip myself in chrome, it will sound heavenly. until then, i will find my breath taken away only by the beauties in nature (including music, women, kisses, the elements, etc).
joking cmon > more respect to Pharrell beacuse he recognizes and respects his predecessors. you can tell the musical funk influences if you listen to N*E*R*D closely. he brings in so much from the timeline of music.
on a related note to my thought above: i think part of the reason why N*E*R*D made such an impact is because, compared to all the other shit that was on the radio, N*E*R*D music was MUSIC. the other electronic, studio produced radio shit couldn't even compare. in my opinion N*E*R*D provided the mainstream with a glimpse of quality artistry -- pieces [nearly] entirely produced (meaning arranged and composed) by an artist who would settle for no less of a commitment of himself.
respect

[thought :: 02]
I think I just want to be appreciated. Not to say I haven't ever been. Lydia probably did appreciate me for everything I am, because she saw me for everything I am. but I wonder if her appreciation is different from what I think appreciation is? I wonder if I only want to be appreciated in the way I want to be appreciated.
well, how would I know otherwise? How would I know how someone thinks and appreciates if it weren't explicit? I also want to meet someone who appreciates in the same way as I do. but right now, I don't think that is logical, nor possible.
oh but it is!
funny how I can want certain things to be explicit, will go to great lengths to explain my explicit thoughts, yet remain hazily vague when I really don't want to share or admit something.
"A portrait is like a conversation, or like dancing. It comes out of an exchange between artist and sitter that relies on artifice and transcends time. A conversation can be better than solitude, just like a waltz with the right person can be better than sitting side by side at the movies in the dark. The controlled steps you both know make it possible to inhabit, for a moment, a world where you understand each other perfectly."
-"Portraits of the Artist" (about Richard Avedon), American Photo magazine, Sept/Oct 2002
you can only understand someone if you can connect to their terminology, their expression; I feel that I need someone to understand who I am and what I appreciate. and for now, it does seem like no one does. it is an unnerving feeling.

[reaction ::]
want this want that, what the fuck is this whiny blabber hm? its like I am entitled to even wish for something. what a fuckin goon... [sigh] but if I am truly honest, it is that I think I need some presence like that. and perhaps that is why I am so attached to those I meet through the things I am fond of. dance, writing, art, creativity, academics(?), etc.
hmm another thing, is it possible that because I have neglected academics that I can't exactly bond with an academic mind, consequently making the understanding in the creative realm that much more important? it is like my world is viciously askew.

what happened there???
